CrushGrind© Vaasa - off-white
The Crushgrind© Vaasa is just like the Billund sustainable spice mill, not specifically made for grinding pepper. The mill with its glass container is made of biocomposite material, and has a ceramic grinding element.
The design is by Sam(uel) Murley of the Danish concept developer Ideas. The Billund is the latest addition to the Danish brand's range, available from us in two color schemes: this off-white version, pale cream colored, and a green version
The handy, thirteen centimetre high Vaasa is, just like the Billund from our range, a 'reverse mill'. The mill stands with the grinding mechanism facing upwards, so that you do not spill any grounds on the worktop or on the tablecloth. It is intended for commercial and household use. A versatile mill, because you can use it not only for pepper, but also for a large number of spices, and dried herbs, so that you can make your own spice mixtures fresh.
The grinding mechanism consists of a rotating ceramic element that was developed in the early 1990s by Ken Muff Larsen. CrushGrind® holds the patent for the ceramic grinding system, which is also used by many other major brands. Crushgrind is produced in Europe.
New is the availability of spare containers, which will give your mill a long life, if you drop a glass. You can of course also use the spare glass as it is intended, to store other spices and with the grinding mechanism of spices to change. Also handy when you want to use different types of pepper next to each other.
How the CrushGrind® works Vaasa
To fill the mill, twist the top of the mill off the glass. The fineness of the grind set yourself up by going through the turn the top disc, clockwise for a finer setting, counterclockwise for a coarser setting.
To grind, hold the mill upside down, hold the grinding housing and turn the glass a quarter turn to the left or right, then make back and forth movements. You will notice, the mill responds very directly.
Cleaning
When you want to change spices, do so by emptying the container and turning the grinder empty, grind possibly some coarse (sea) salt to clean the ceramic part completely. When you loosen the wheel with which you determine the grind, the grinding mechanism is released, if you want to clean with water.
Preferably do this with a hard, dry brush. Before doing this, read the instructions on the CrushGrind website. Make sure that the mechanism is completely dry when you use the grinder again! The drying time is at least 24 hours.
For the Vaasa has been used of a biocomposite material with cellulose fibres from certified wood - mainly coniferous trees - that has been harvested from sustainably managed forests. It has a low CO2 footprint unlike biomaterials made from edible crops. The biocomposite used for Billund does not compete with the food production chain.
The biocomposite is based on almost 100% renewable materials with two main components:
- cellulose fibers, of wood
- liquid rosin (called tall oil), a residue from pulp production

Matching pots are available separately, which also serve as container for the mill. These pots are available in sets of two, but also individually.
