Lada luwu, also known as Sulawesi pepper, comes from the Indonesian island known as Celebes and is grown in  Luwu Timur (Kabupaten East Luwu), one of the regencies in South Sulawesi.

The cultivation of black pepper began on the island of South Sulawesi in the 1930s east of Lake Towuti. This is where the Luwu Raya community lives.

Maruttung is used in cultivation, a technique for propagation and germination of pepper plants by cuttings. The pepper has regional protection: The MPIG is a protected area for approximately five thousand farmers united in  182 farmer groups and mostly locally operating local cooperatives.

For most farming families, pepper cultivation is their only source of income. On average, the yield from their 1,000-1,500 square meter plot is 1,000 kilograms, 0.7 tons per hectare

Why not organic?

In order to be able to supply this organically grown pepper under the predicate organic, we as a packer/producer of the pepper will have to be certified. We are not. Although we process and store the organic products and products from regular cultivation strictly separately, we are therefore not allowed to use the predicate organic.
